What does the PTE Academic involve?

The PTE Academic uses authentic material from a variety of academic contexts and topics which reflects the language you will use in real life academic settings. The test assesses the four communicative skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) as well as six language acquisition skills (grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse).

The PTE Academic score is displayed in a graph and includes your overall score, communicative score and language skills. The graph allows you to see your strengths and weaknesses and how each skill relates to your overall performance. Candidates will be ranked on a scale from 10 points to 90 points.

The four communicative skills will be tested in an integrated manner so candidates may need to demonstrate the following and more:

  • Read a passage and use the information gathered from the passage in your written response
  • Listen to a conversation and verbally summarize the topics discussed
  • Listen to a lecture and write down the missing words in the transcript
  • Listen to a short recording and highlight any words in the transcript which did not correspond to the words you heard.

Each candidate’s test will have a different number of questions for each section. The whole test will take around three hours, including the untimed and unmarked introduction to the test and an optional break of up to 10 minutes in the middle.
