The British International School in Shanghai

Anne Murphy

I recently visited Nord Anglia Education schools in Shanghai. The British International School in Pudong and Puxi. Thank you Katy Christie, Director of Admissions & Marketing at the Pudong campus and Christine Bacon, Head of Admissions at the Puxi campus for the wonderful tours and for all the valuable insight on the schools. I was very impressed with what I saw and I am confident that the Nord Anglia Education School in Hong Kong will be a tremendous success.

At the British International School in Shanghai: Academics are based on the National Curriculum of England and the General Certificate of Secondary Education. Children start at the Pudong campus in the Early Years Foundation Stage (from age 18 months) and from 2 years old at the Puxi campus. For the 2011-2012 academic year, at the Pudong campus 51% of GCSE year students were graded A*-A, with 47% achieving five or more at A* or A.  All students in Years 12 and 13 participate in the IB programme, which provides them a first class preparation for further and higher education. A highlight for the Puxi Campus, where 13% of students achieved scores of over 40, was the achievement of twin sisters, both of whom accomplished the rare distinction of scoring a maximum 45 points – two of only 110 students in the world in 2012 to gain this exceptional mark.  The school’s results are exceptional considering that English is the second language of the majority of students.

In addition to The British International School’s evident commitment to academic excellence, the school is remarkably student-centred. State-of-the-art facilities on each campus offer competitive sports, fine arts and a variety of co-curricular activities, which are designed to match the demands of the student body. Admission to either of the British International School campuses is non-selective and the low student-to-teacher ratio, results in waiting lists for some years, but it’s always worth checking with the friendly Admissions teams as status changes on a regular basis. The group has seen a 22% growth in student admissions over the last academic year, compared to a global increase of 7%, emphasising that Nord Anglia Education Schools are the right choice for parents.
