Winnie is an experienced Chinese teacher with special focus in teaching Chinese as a second language. Since 2002, Winnie has been delivering Mandarin training to students from a variety of backgrounds, including senior expatriate executives in Hong Kong, university, secondary and primary schools students, covering syllabus including (I)GCSE, A-level, IBMYP & IBDP Chinese, SAT and AP Chinese. 

Winnie holds First Class in Putonghua Proficiency Test from the State Language and Writing Commission of China, Master degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Teaching Putonghua certificate from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Winnie is fluent in Mandarin, English and Cantonese.

On becoming a teacher: 
As a native mandarin speaker, I always had requests from friends and family to teach them mandarin, so I was no stranger to teaching. Started as a hobby, my love for teaching just grew as I see my students make progress, especially those with potential and just needed the right guidance. I was lucky enough to have a few inspiring teachers during my studies, and I wanted to do the same for others. Being able to make a positive impact to another person is extremely rewarding, especially when it comes to languages, it goes beyond helping students getting good grades, it empowers a person to communicate with another culture. Having said that, I think what is even more fascinating is to see my students being able to do something they didn’t think they were capable of doing, and the joy that brings them. This is why I love teaching. 

How I enhance my work: 
I have been practicing yoga for almost 10 years. At first, like many people, I did it for the health benefits, increased flexibility and stress relief. But what yoga really teaches you is transcendence, going beyond what we think we are capable of. In today’s culture a lot of my students carry a world of expectation on their young shoulders, especially here Hong Kong, I feel I can help them achieve something, even as little as a self introduction in Chinese.

Admirable and inspirational person: 
As a teacher, a Chinese teacher, Confucius is a role model that I admire the most. His philosophy of loving others, being selfless, deeply influenced me as a person and as a teacher, as it has to the Chinese culture as a whole. I believe learning Mandarin is much more than learning the ability to speak the language, after all, you can only master a language if you understand its culture.
