What are the prerequisites of this course?

There are no prerequisites, but an I/ GCSE qualification in Physics may be useful.

What can I do with an A-level in Physics?

You can go on to university courses like an honours degree in Physics or related subjects, or choose to enter employment.

The skills learned by studying physics are relevant to many careers, such as applications engineer, data analyst, design engineer, Physics teacher, lab technician, laser engineer, optical engineer, software developer, systems analyst or web developer.

If you are an international student taking A-levels the basic offer is made for 3 A-level subjects. It is very important when choosing these subjects that you understand what options you will have for university when the time comes. ITS has a long-established, highly experienced counselling team who can help you make these decisions and plan your academic course. How is the course structured?

You can find the Edexcel course specification here.

The course consists of 6 Units – 3 IAS and 3 IA2 Units. The full International Advanced Level award consists of the three IAS units (Units 1, 2 and 3), plus three IA2 units (Units 4, 5 and either 6 or 7). The percentage of total IAL marks for each Unit is in brackets followed by the examination time.

Unit 2 Physics at Work (20%) (1 hour 30 minutes)
Unit 3 Exploring Physics (10%) (1 hour 20 minutes)

IA2
Unit 4 Physics on the Move (20%) (1 hour 35 minutes)
Unit 5 Physics from Creation to Collapse (20%) (1 hour 35 minutes)
Unit 6 Experimental Physics OR Unit 7 Physics Practical Examination (10%)

Assessment 
Assessment in January and June

  • External assessment: written examination
  • Units 1, 2, 4 and 5 are 80 raw marks; Units 3 and 7 are 40 raw marks
