Happiness apps

By Ruth Puentespina

As mental health awareness comes increasingly to the forefront in all that we do, more and more platforms have been created in an effort to manage and promote mental health. Many apps have been created for a variety of audiences and functions; two teenagers in the US have created an app called NotOK that allows the user to alert a trusted list of contacts when a mental health crisis occurs. Schools in Australia are rolling out mental well-being apps in classrooms, which have been deemed helpful particularly in areas that are isolated and lacking access to many support services.

Teachers are trained to use these apps to help children manage themselves. Obviously, there are limits to technology and an app can only do so much, so these should not be used in place of a trained professional but it does bring comfort to know that help is accessible at the tip of one’s finger.
