Italy bans unvaccinated children from school

By ITS Education Asia

Given the recent outbreak of measles occurring in US schools, this response from Italy seems to be the right way to go. The state has to weigh up the rights of parents to choose what is best for their children against the public health risk of the spread of infectious diseases.

The new law was passed to raise Italy's plummeting vaccination rates from below 80% to the World Health Organisation's 95% target.

The 95% threshold is the point at which "herd immunity" kicks in - when enough of the population is vaccinated for the spread of the disease to become unlikely, thereby protecting those who cannot be vaccinated.

My view is the rights of the ‘many’ in this instance should override the rights of individual parents who are opposed to vaccination.
