A disgruntled student recently received a £61,000 payout after suing her university for false advertising and selling her a not very useful degree. “Pok Wong, who graduated from Anglia Ruskin University in 2013 with a first in international business strategy, claimed the university had “fraudulently misrepresented” the course and career prospects.”
Firstly it should be noted that this was an “out of court settlement” and the university has denied the claims. However, the bigger question is how liable are universities for the “employment ability” of the qualifications they offer.
Degrees are expensive and universities need students to run, therefore aggressive marketing of qualifications can and does happen.
Should universities be liable for students who cannot find employment when they finish their course?
