Negative feedback loop

By Ruth Puentespina

There was once a time when a telephone was used for the sole purpose of calling someone. With the evolution of modern technology, not only does the cell phone in your pocket have more power than the systems used to get Apollo 11 to the moon, these days accessibility has taken on new forms. Cell phone usage, specifically that for social media consumption, has allowed for the development of addictive behaviour among teens.

Public awareness on the need to limit tech time, particularly among younger age groups, must be promoted. Smartphone effects undoubtedly have a huge impact on mood and mental health, affecting day-to-day functioning. A recent meta-analysis on over 42,000 young people showed that problematic smartphone usage grossly impacted behavior, with 23% presenting symptoms that presented an addiction. It is up to parents to teach their children how to have a healthy relationship with their devices and impose limits on their use of such things.
