In response to recent deadly school shootings in Florida, schools in the state are planning to install facial recognition cameras. The cameras, as part of a surveillance system, can be used to check faces against a database of expelled students, sex offenders or convicted felons.
This type of response to trying to improve school security should be both considered and questioned. There are many legitimate concerns about this technology being in schools, such as privacy issues, hacking, and the opportunity cost — how could this money be spent if it were directed elsewhere?
This plan also raises addition questions: If the camera recognizes an expelled student, what happens next? If this person was coming to carry out a school shooting how would recognizing them help prevent the shooting?
