A recent article in the New York Times caught my attention as it raises a very difficult question often faced by students: What to do if I know my classmate is cheating? This is a difficult question for young people, as it is unfair to see a classmate gain good grades when you know they have cheated. The reporting process can be made more difficult if the whistle blower is identified in the investigation process.
Being identified as a “tattletale” can have social consequences within a school. While it would be nice to think that a person reporting cheating should be seen as a responsible member of the school community, this is often not the case with one’s peers.
