Study gives insight - and advice - on picky eating in children

By ITS Education Asia

Claire McCarthy MD, a Senior Faculty Editor at Harvard Health Publishing explains what a study of “picky eaters” tells us.

  • Picky eating starts early and stays.
  • Temperament plays a role
  • Picky eaters are usually not underweight
  • Parenting plays a role too.

McCarthy explains that much of picky eating may be related to negative thoughts and memories about certain foods, or eating in general. The more upbeat and positive about eating, the more likely your child will be that way too. Here are some ideas on how to do that:

  • Have family meals
  • Don’t force a child to eat
  • Involve your child in meal planning and preparation.
