ChalkFace loves to share exceptional actions by educators from around the Globe, therefore Corrina Reamer deserves our praise. Multiple studies have shown if children are introduced to the pleasures of reading from a young age they are much more likely to continue to read throughout their life. To get young people with limited English to start reading and enjoying English language books is an awesome achievement.
In the four years since Reamer began teaching at the Alexandria campus, her students — all immigrant or international students with limited English — have on average achieved two years’ worth of reading progress each year.
Reamer is a rare bright spot at a moment when children’s reading proficiency is plunging nationwide in the US. A study released last year by the National Center for Education Statistics found that two-thirds of fourth- and eighth-graders in the United States do not meet basic federal standards for reading proficiency, capping a decade’s worth of poor performance.
Well done Corrina! Keep up the good work.
