What do I enjoy most about tutoring?😁

One thing I enjoy most about tutoring is the relationship I can create with the students, to view their struggles and insecurities from their perspective and help them overcome them as a team. As a student, I engage in classes where I can connect with my professors individually, allowing me to interact with my professors better by asking and answering questions actively throughout the lectures. This is because I have gotten to know that "when students feel supported, they are more likely to engage in learning and have better academic outcomes". A tutor's impact on the student is an essential and pleasant aspect of tutoring. I will be able to instil confidence in the students to pursue their favourite courses. The students can learn necessary learning skills from the sessions, such as using past papers or flashcards when needed.

My Strengths as Tutor💪

One of my strengths as a tutor is listening to the students' needs and understanding the parents' requirements. I will start communicating with the parents and consistently update them about their children's progress. I can adapt to the need of the parents and tailor my course material to meet the student's needs. My key strength is that I can provide personalized tutoring lessons that create a more optimistic and relaxed environment for the children to feel more comfortable and allow the students to interact freely.

Most important things I can do for a student🏅

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand the student's needs and structure the classes accordingly. As each student is unique, their preferred teaching style and materials would also be unique. The tutor should create a more welcoming environment for the students to let them engage in the classes and give them a chance to participate. They should be prepared to adjust to the dynamic personality of the students. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is creating a progress tracker for each student that can be used by both the tutors themselves and the parents. Tracking their progress will help the tutors understand the performance and pace of the student and determine the areas that need improvement. Using this, the tutors can recognize the obstacles faced by the students and create strategies to overcome them.

About Me

I am a year two student currently studying at HKUST. I will be graduating in the year 2024. I fell in love with marketing, economics and anything business related when I was first exposed to the courses in high school. The different business subjects have interested me in the management of an organization, the formulation of strategic goals, decision-making process. I've had a lot of exposure to the business environment, for example, the different projects I was a part of and the problems I was presented with during the courses. A lot of my classes involved working with actual companies to solve real problems. I enjoy reading; it has helped me expand my knowledge further and taught me to concentrate and focus on tasks better. I complete the homework given to me on that day so I don't miss the deadline. I'm known for being a detail-oriented, well-organized person. Other than that, my friends usually tell me I am a good listener and understand their perspectives easily.

Experience

0.5
During my high school internship experience program, I worked at a tutoring centre called Eye Level Learning Centre. I was an assistant supervisor, and my job responsibilities were to correct the homework completed by the students, answer the questions that the students may have and manage the reception. Though I was not presented with the tutoring aspect of the job as much, I got to experience the everyday responsibilities of tutoring. From this experience, I learned to be patient, understand the children's needs, and how I could help them when they faced difficulties with their assigned tasks. I had the opportunity to tutor a student in India. She needed help to keep up with her physics course content and syllabus as she had recently moved to India from the US. Hence, her parents contacted me to tutor and help her with physics. Through this, I gained first-hand experience being a tutor. Initially, I was unsure about structuring the classes and how I could make the lessons more engaging. But, as I got familiar with her needs and the aspects she was struggling with, I was able to create a more interactive and capturing for her. For example, she was unfamiliar with the exam structure and the content needed for the exam, so I sorted out past papers with similar questions to practice together.
