我喜歡補習的最大原因?

I really enjoy helping others, whether that is with volunteer work, charity or just in general with my friends and family. And as someone who struggled in primary school, I really appreciate my tutors. I understand what it's like to be overwhelmed in class when you sometimes feel compared to other students. So, helping students who feel that way and need one-on-one time with a tutor is really rewarding. Being able to change someones life potentially just by introducing a new way of thinking/studying approach is a very fulfilling idea on its own. I also feel it is important for students to recognise that making mistakes and learning is not only an important skill academically, but developing this resilience will carry into adulthood where it is an advantageous life skill.

我作為補習老師的優勢

My strengths as a tutor would be my compassion. Being able to develop a positive relationship with a student is crucial to improving their learning process. Understanding them as a person and how they absorb information can assist in progressing their learning. I am also highly organised and professional. Keeping track of the students' progress is important in planning lessons. Identifying which chapters they have learned and the chapters they need most assistance in is fundamental. As well as going through their assignments and exams, to understand which areas they might have trouble with. Being organised and professional is also important in terms of updating their parents/family members of their progress, keeping them informed on your lesson plans and how you will help the student improve. I would also use what I learned from psychology to aid in the learning process. I have learnt a lot about child development and learning. For example, for younger kids, incorporating imagination and play can improve ones use of language and communication. Being exposed to different scenarios, even hypothetical, can improve vocabulary memorisation. Furthermore, using these methods can help a child/student gain more social confidence. Another example could be attention span. The average person spends 20% working and 80% procrastinating. Therefore, there are more efficient methods in studying where you can time yourself, giving yourself a 20 minute deadline to complete as much work as you can then rewarding yourself for 5 minutes. Studies have shown that this method can improve productivity. I believe that my experience in psychology can aid the tutoring process.

我能為學生做的最重要的事情

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to have empathy and to be compassionate. Encouraging students to not be afraid of mistakes can improve how they view their learning process, therefore acquiring information with a keen mindset. Furthermore, these character traits assist in building rapport with the student which will make it easier to identify their learning styles. Consequently, lessons can be planned and organised to fit the best way the student learns. Being able to recognise where the student has trouble and where their strengths lie is incredibly important as well. Focusing on areas where the student needs the most assistance and providing advice on how they can improve in these areas outside of class too.

關於我自己

My name is Emily Donnet. I recently graduated from the University of Sussex and achieved a 2:1 (second class upper division) for my Psychology Bachelors (BSc) degree. I have an enthusiastic interest in child development and contemporary education. Furthermore, I studied the importance of family on child development and school performance. I would identify as adopting both a creative and studious character. I have taught myself how to paint, play guitar, piano and edit film; which illustrates how I prioritise self-learning and achieving goals. I incorporate my creativity in my teaching experiences to make lessons memorable and enjoyable. I also try to promote initiative and proactive behaviour when it comes to teaching. I am also an extroverted and empathetic person. Coming from a diverse background, being half Singaporean half Belgian and growing up in Hong Kong, I find that I have been exposed to a range of cultures and individuals. Due to this, I can relate to others easily and enjoy interacting with people. It is especially rewarding when I get to work with and help kids. I hope to gain more experience in the education field to one day pursue a masters in education (i.e. PGCE) or school counselling.

Most of my teaching/tutoring experiences have come from volunteering projects: English Teacher Assistant: When I was in high school (about 16 years old), I volunteered to be a teaching assistant. This was orchestrated through our CAS projects in high school and I assisted an English teacher at a local school in Tai Po every week. Most of the students could not speak much English. It mostly comprised of going around the classroom and sitting down with students, guiding them through class exercises, reading stories to them and talking with them so they can practice speaking English. HLY English Camp: When I was 18, two classmates and I were responsible for hosting a two day English camp that took place in Hong Lok Yuen. This took a long time to prepare as it was an overnight camp. However, my classmates and I created lesson plans and activities for local Chinese speaking students. The camp was a success, we incorporated activities such as painting, acting and sports. Art Teacher (Easter camp) at NIS: This was also a volunteer project that actually occurred this month. I volunteered to teach watercolour painting to the kindergarten kids at the Norwegian international school kindergarten. I organised art lessons to fit the theme of the day (e.g. weather, animals, food). I guided them through the art process (how to watercolour paint) as well as assisting them in describing their artwork, encouraging them to utilise new words learnt that day. It was also a fun piece of art for them to bring home to their parents.
