Workshop 4: Contemporary batik

Create a simple batik on cotton in only two hours using the canting, cap or both. Longer classes let you add more layers of wax and more colours (Note: students under 15 years old will use glue instead of wax to ensure safety). We do not teach so much theory - there are too many centuries of Indonesian culture to cover. Instead, we will spark your interest and give you direct, hands-on experience of making a batik.

Duration: 1 day/5 hours (1 hour break). Students are welcome to stay longer in the studio to finish their work if needed.

Fee: HKD1,500

Description: We’ll take it step by step to understand design, drawing, waxing and colouring to get the authentic batik look. You’ll be recommended resources and/or reading if you wish to research further beyond this practical workshop.

Materials to bring: Materials are provided.

Takeaway: A rich experience of a unique cultural art.
