The Extended Essay is an independent piece of research part of the core Diploma and is results in a 4,000-word paper/essay/report. It is compulsory for all students.

The extended essay provides:

• great practical preparation for undergraduate research
• a chance for students to investigate a topic of special interest related to one of the six DP subjects.

Students develop skills in:

• formulating an appropriate research question
• engaging in a personal exploration of the topic
• communicating ideas
• developing an argument.

If you are an international student taking the IB Diploma the basic offer is made for your 3 IB Higher level subjects. It is very important when choosing these subjects that you understand what options you will have for university when the time comes.
