PTE Young Learners is a global standardised test for younger children who are learning English as a foreign language. PTE Young Learners is a theme-based test which is designed to be fun and motivating. At the lower levels, it aims to test how well children can use language structures and, at the higher levels, how well they can use language to complete communicative tasks.

The test is composed of 4 levels (Firstwords, Springboard, Quickmarch, Breakthrough). The major aim of PTE is to make a child’s first encounter with English memorable and interesting.

Test Format

• A single paper-based test assessing listening and reading comprehension and extended writing
• An oral test assessing candidates’ English communicative abilities on a short presentation and interaction within a game

PTE Young Learners is designed to be interesting and fun to prepare students to communicate freely and demonstrate a strong proficiency of the language.

The tests are created around the everyday adventures of the Brown Family. Children are tested on their ability to use structures and functions in realistic contexts and, later on in the series, on their ability to use language to carry out specific communicative tasks. The main objective of the test is to capture children’s attention. The emphasis is on real-life situations.
