Tanglin Trust School, Singapore Turns 95!

By Sponsored Feature

On 18 March, 95 years ago, the school was founded by Anne Griffith-Jones OBE in the grounds of the Tanglin Club to provide high quality British education to children of expatriate families in Singapore.

Beginning with just five students, the school quickly went from strength to strength. In 1958, the British European Association (BEA) bought the school, forming Tanglin Trust School Ltd. Miss Griff was awarded an OBE for her services to education and in 1962, the Sultan of Pahang bestowed on her the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian for meritorious service to education.

On our campus at Portsdown Road, we celebrated our 95th birthday with a party day! There was bunting around the field and everyone dressed in red, white and blue. Students stepped back in time to learn more about Tanglin’s rich heritage through the use of precious archive material. Uniforms from days gone by, children’s written work, class photographs, school trips and special days captured in the Yearbooks from the 1970s, 80s and 90s were brought to life. Students enjoyed a range of activities from the Senior bands' musical welcome at the start of the school day, to sketching historical Tanglin buildings, participating in old fashioned party games, a whole school singing of Happy Birthday, and a big dance off to music from the last nine decades on the field.

Students also feasted on delicious party food with their classmates and staff received a scrumptious 95th birthday cupcake.

It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our heritage and to celebrate our achievements as the oldest British international school in South East Asia. How proud Miss Griff would be to see how her beloved school has grown.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey. As the school moves towards its centenary in 2025, we have a clear direction for the school which honours the past, embraces the present and aspires to the future.
