Almost all the colleges I wanted to go to rejected me. Now what?

By Sue Smith

For students who have been unsuccessful with their university applications, unfortunately it is virtually impossible to be sure of how the university or college has assessed you and what exactly they are looking for.

It is generally a fact of life that there will always be people who are better than you in terms of their suitability for a course – because they have better grades, a better mix of experience or for a variety of other factors. But it is also the case that having a university education is still worthwhile and it is very likely that you will be able to benefit from virtually any higher education environment.

If you have been rejected by the universities which you wanted to go to, you need to reassess your situation. Are you applying for a course of study that you don’t have the grades for? Or for one which is so competitive, that getting those grades or scores or marks is unlikely? Has your range of universities been too narrow?

However, there are a very large number of options when it comes to universities, and the ones you have heard of and then researched are a small number of the options available. It is of course fine to have a dream, but it is not always possible to achieve those dreams. On the other hand, it is possible to gain a place at a university, so perhaps examining what it is that has fueled that dream and what you think that dream promises you will help you choose something that is more achievable.
