According to Dr. Florence Huang, a Hong Kong based psychologist, “Children pick up on their parents’ moods more easily than you might think,” which is why it is a good idea to try and curtail these negative emotions around children.
Prolonged exposure to these negative emotions may affect self-esteem, and create self-blame, shame, humiliation and helplessness. The affect is greater on younger children with fathers having a stronger impact on the effects of negative emotions. Dr. Lim Boon Leng, a psychiatrist at Dr. BL Lim Centre for Psychological Wellness in Singapore does provide some relief. He states that “The good news is that most children will not be too adversely affected by them and will, in fact, learn how to deal with them, as long as the bad mood and anger bursts aren’t frequent, unpredictable or violent.”
