Unconditional offer students 'more likely to drop out'

By ITS Education Asia

ChalkFace has been following the ongoing discussion regarding the wisdom of unconditional offers (when a student is offered a university place regardless of what grades they achieve at secondary school) being made to students.

Recent studies have shown that “Eighteen-years-olds in England who are given unconditional university offers before taking their A-levels are more likely to drop out in their first year of degree study, research finds.”

The number of institutions offering unconditional offers has been increasing.

Analysis suggests that the dropout rate is10% higher for students who accept an unconditional offer as compared to those who need to achieve a particular grade to get in.

What do you think? Should unconditional offers be reduced/stopped?
