University bans hamburgers 'to tackle climate change'

By ITS Education Asia

Climate change is one of the biggest environmental and social issues facing the world today. Individual organizations’ efforts to reduce their own carbon footprint should be applauded. Goldsmiths, University of London, is removing all beef products from sale - and charging a 10p levy on bottled water and single-use plastic cups.

The university emits about 3.7 million kg of carbon each year but is hoping to become carbon neutral by 2025.

The headline relates to the claim that “beef is more damaging to the environment as cows produce more methane and require more land and water than other livestock.”

Maybe this type of action can be a model for other institutions and business globally. Anything to try to reduce the problem is better than doing nothing.
