Up to a third of UK Universities' intake could be affected by proposed student loan ban

As a follow up to a previous ChalkFace post, leaked data shows that a proposed recommendation to stop students from qualifying for a loan if they get fewer than three Ds in their A-level results could affect up to 36% of full-time degree students.

This proposal seems poised to affect poorer families much more significantly that the middle class. Coupled with a proposed cut in fees, the potential loss of income could be disastrous for universities struggling as it is.

Nick Hillman, director of the Higher Education Policy Institute think-tank, says “If you push them over a cliff, what looks like a moderately popular policy of cutting fees suddenly becomes a major political scandal. There could be a dozen universities in serious trouble.”
